I’ve started reading The New City by John Lorinc to fill the nonfiction part of my reading lineup. So far it’s been a really interesting read. It was released in 2006 and feels a bit out of date but otherwise contains a lot of helpful information.
My favourite part is that unlike many books about Canadian cities it includes a discussion of a range of Canadian cities. It goes beyond the big two or three and past even just throwing Calgary a bone. Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Regina, Edmonton and Halifax have all been invited to the party. It’s like Canadians are mostly urban creatures who live in a range of cities all worthy of discussion and mention. Too often other books come close to being good or convincing but suffer from serious GTA syndrome.
